What Wild Women Do by Karma Brown

Book Cover
The Brief
As a design intern for Penguin Random House Canada, I got the chance to work on a brief to design a cover for Karma Brown’s new book alongside a designer. My design ended up being selected as the final cover! The story is written in a dual timeline of two women's perspectives, one in the 1970s who runs a camp in the woods that disappears and the other, an aspiring screenwriter in the present who sets out to unravel a mystery in the very same camp. The editor was looking for a cover to evoke a sense of mystery with an influence of 70s retro design but still felt fresh and contemporary.

The Ideation
I was really inspired by 70s retro design while doing research for the brief and played around a lot with different ways to manipulate the text while using popular fonts from the 1970s. To set the atmosphere of the book, I looked for imagery and used colours that evoked the feeling of summer and being in nature.

The Solution
The final cover that was selected showcases the main character who is slightly hidden under the title, which evokes the right balance of mystery along with the summer spent in nature atmosphere found in the book. The vintage feeling photograph paired with the bright and bold type ties it together to make it feel 70s nostalgic and yet modern.

The book was printed as a paperback with flaps on matte paper with a spot gloss on the author’s name and the pink area of the extruded type only to give a slight debossing effect on the yellow title text.
